A Fresh Start in a Familiar Place

So after a year of traveling, adventures, making friends, and generally having an awesome time, i am back "home" in Calgary. Since i've been here, i've realized that i might as well keep track of what i've done too!

basically this summer of 2010 has been as good as i could have asked for. now, to go back and write about these adventures and the other ridiculous things that have happened. starting backwards.

cheers!

Caesars, Dubstep, Golf, Board Games, Food

so started off the weekend on a friday. pretty chill workday, everyone's gone so left early to go to west. for some delicious delicious caesars. actually the best caesars in calgary i am pretty sure. they come with a giant shrimp as a garnish. rocked some appy's with john, ashley and rachel, then headed towards kensington to continue the night. went to the source, ogled some snowboards, longboards, and other assorted sports equipment, then went to the toy store, which was soooo cool. all the toys that i didn't have as a child. after the toy store was molly malone's where i have actually never been before. several pints of guinness (pretty good pour with the shamrock and all) later, we were out the door to the yardhouse. then i get this phone call from andrew, and somehow flux pavilion and downlink are playing that night at the distillery. soooo for sure going down there. hanging out at yardhouse for a little while, met up with kevin and lee and some other people for a bit, and got chris moore to join us as well. head down to the distillery for the show.

dress shoes were a terrible idea, as were jeans and one too many shirts. never been to the distillery either, but the space was great for some beauty bass. pretty awesome show. really intense, loud, and one of the most ridiculous events i have ever been to. shirts optional was in effect, as the temperature and humidity became stifling. there was a lion costume. i rolled up my jeans, pulled up the socks, and went ahead and used the shirt as a bandana. flux pavilion was just sick though. soooo good. went for some post bar gatorade at the mac's, then inexplicably got a footlong sub. took a cab home, and promptly put the sub in the fridge for the next day.

good sleep in, head to shaganappi for nine holes. kind of an unexpectedly chilly day. this season has been some pretty terrible golfing for me, just can't make any shots. still a good time trying though. made some delicious yogurt and coconut curry, ate a steamed bun and noodles, played several games of scrabble. scrabble is actually one of the best games ever. it is also fun playing with people that do not play strictly three letter words. played some settlers of catan, built an empire on wood and gold.

woke up early on sunday, ate some chinese buns, went to church with rachel and family. it was pretty good, i actually quite enjoyed it. tried to go to lazy loaf and kettle for lunch, but unfortunately it was closed. so the coup for lunch! which was pretty amazing. smoked tofu panini, soup and a falafel quesadilla - it is food like this that makes me want to be a vegetarian. visited a few vintage stores on 17th, some cool and ridiculous clothes - probably shouldn't be getting any more wool sweaters at this point though. dropped by megatunes to look for some ridiculous music. happened upon an ad for a three 6 mafia show in september hahaha. tried to go to the fabric store in huntington which turned out to have transformed into a asian food store, which we then proceeded to browse in. ahh, brought back a lot of childhood snack time memories. watched pan's labryinth - which actually is such a good movie - reminded me a lot of the hemingway book 'for whom the bell tolls'. really great cinematography, acting, great storyline. dinner from alfredo, really good, and then went to rachel's friend's house for some tea, chatting, and looking at plaid fabric. pretty solid weekend right there.

Fireworks, Reggaefest, Park, Rain, Tea, Scrabble, More Fireworks, Baseball

another fairly easy friday at work, head home a little early. get a fleece blanket and head out towards elliston park for the globalfest. stop at this sketchy place in the little saigon plaza called le da for some delicious vietnamese submarines. mmm meatball sub (called xiu mai) is so good. haven't been there in forever, there is a 'pool hall' in the back and a restaurant in the front. pretty solid though. walked down 17th ave to elliston park and set up a nice place on the hill for the show. wandered around the festival grounds - there was actually a lot of really cool stuff there! dance performances, a lot of really good food - only could have the delicious chicken, chorizo and pork tacos cause of the pregaming with the subs - but there was a lot more to see and do than i remember there to be. hadn't gone to globalfest for a couple years, and now there are all the cultural pavilions at the lake and some other merchants and such as well. settled down as the sun set - one thing to mention is the very hazy sky due to the smoke blowing in from the wildfires in bc - and waited for the fireworks to start. the german team put on the show this night and it was great. i love that they are timed to music - there was some classical mixed in with some killers and kings of leon. definitely a lot of new fireworks that i have never seen before too, like multiple explosions and different shapes and stuff like that. very enjoyable show. experienced some jamming on the way out for the first time in awhile, and then snuck outta there to get some sleep.

good sleep in, woke up in time to head down to millenium park for reggaefest. parked in kensington and had a nice stroll down. not as many people as i had expected, but a good selection of food and assorted things to purchase. met up with chris, his friend nick and andrew as well. got a hacky sack and a spiderman finger puppet. chilled out to some reggae. got an 'evaluation' from this chiropractor tent. pretty ridiculous, i guess everyone has some sort of crooked spine/imbalance problem. pretty funny afterwards, all of us trying to correct our posture. had some beers in the beer garden, talked about which birds are suitable for falconry, and how nick once went to jail for a night. played some hack with shoes off - terrible idea. but fun anyways. ate a few jamaican patties, some salt fish and dumplings, jerk chicken/oxtail/other typcial foods. pretty tasty actually. more hack (with shoes on, so much better) and the reggae danced the night away to some very solid reggae tunes. the band 'inner circle' was there - sooo basically inner circle are the originators of the songs 'bad boys' and 'sweat'. pretty ridiculous, but pretty cool. such a fun time, i love reggae so much. who doesn't like reggae, really? there was an afterparty at hifi, so we made our way over there, stopping for some brewhouses on the way - basically have concluded that drinking on the street is more of a guideline than a rule - it's a stupid rule anyways. passed by all the roadhouse/whiskey type bars, thought it was pretty funny looking at those 18 year old kids and thinking that at one time i could have been like that too. anyways, hifi was pretty good, continued the reggae dancing with a little more bass. ran to catch the last train back up to sunnyside, at which point an argument about women's pants inseams broke out. no way that the average inseam is 34, that's just ridiculous. met the president of the u of a knitting club, and andrew was persuaded to purchase a bag of thai crackers from this thai lady selling them. also he exchanged phone numbers with her in the case that he would like to order more crackers. another dispute broke out about the distance between chicken on the way and lake bonavista, turns out that it is less than 15 km. we go by chicken on the way, which is very unfortunately closed, so we settle for tubby dog instead. the sherm's ultimate gripper was a terrible idea, but fantastic at the time. long day and late night, but very, very fun. and also completely ridiculous.

sunday was a good day for just some good relaxation. woke up in time to head down to glenmore park for a bbq with the lion dance crew - haven't been to glenmore in years...it's changed a lot from what i remember. houses right up against the park, just terrible expansion and sprawl in calgary. played some guitar, settlers of catan, ate some burgers after the previous night's tubby dog subsided. kinda cloudy but a good day. headed down to kensington to catch a bit of the market collective that was going on - really cool paintings, prints, and art. one day i will be able to gather some of this stuff together - or more likely just start making my own prints and such. checked out a couple vintage stores in the kensington area as it began to rain. stopped in to oolong tea house for a some delicious tea and even better conversation.
